5 Lauda Street, Killarney Gardens, Cape Town

Designed back in 1996, this was a new factory for a Cape Town company manufacturing home décor products. The style of the building was dictated to a very large extent by an adjoining factory owned by the same company.

At 700 m2 it is one of largest building we have been involved in. We visited the factory recently and 25 years on, it is still owned by the same company and is still providing adequately for their needs, which is a compliment and proof that the original design fulfilled the brief very well.

Saxon Lodge, Gansbaai

This large guest house was built from a derelict sandstone fisherman’s cottage, overlooking the harbour and sea in Gansbaai. The original cottage had no foundations and the whole building had to be underpinned and structural concrete columns built into the old walls before any new work could start. Maintaining the character of the original cottage was a challenge as very little remained visible once the additions were complete, but we tried to keep in with the Cape Vernacular style that is so prevalent in the area, particularly around the village of Elim.

The completed 4 star establishment slept a total of 18 guests in 8 suites – one being a family suite, with a 24 seater restaurant, conference room and pub.

48 Broadway, Fisherhaven

48 Broadway is a two apartment rental building in Fisherhaven. Designed purely for the rental market, the it has a three and a four bedroom apartment, each double storey with open-plan living spaces on the ground floor, opening onto large patio and verandas and small enclosed gardens.

The luxurious, modern interiors have proved very desirable for the tenants, providing a good, regular rental income for the owners.

5 Broadway, Fisherhaven

This was an addition to a small two bedroom 80 m2 cottage, with a single garage. Strongly influenced by the Cape Vernacular style, excavating down along the side of the cottage enabled us to build a 50 m2 underground winery and the extended ground floor included a family room, open plan kitchen / lounge / diner, three bedrooms, one with en-suite and dressing room. Upstairs is a completely self-contained two bedroom apartment.

A very tropical feeling was created through a three-sided veranda entrance with a water feature and tropical plants.

Charles Fox Winery

This project was to convert and extend some old sheds on a fruit farm in Elgin to create a winery for the production of Cap Classique wines. The original buildings consisted mainly of a worker’s cottage, workshop and parking for tractors. There was also the old homestead which was renovated and extended as a separate project as the owner’s new accommodation.

A wine cellar of 280 m2 in size was excavated into a bank to form the basement with a tasting room and kitchen situated on top. The workshop and cottage were converted and became the wine making area and barrel room. The tractor parking was converted into offices and storage.
